ANNANDALE, Va. (AP) -- The U.S. Geological Survey says a small earthquake has been recorded in the Washington area.
There have been no reports of damage or injuries.
The earthquake occurred at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, and the epicenter was about a mile from Annandale. The Geological Survey estimated its magnitude at 1.8.
Around 1:30pm, Fairfax County Police report lots of calls about a loud boom and shaking. Arlington County Fire also received calls from people saying their buildings were shaken.
At first, the U.S. Geological Survey said they had not registered any earthquakes in our area. But in a follow up call from Fox 5 the USGS now says they do believe it was an earthquake.
According to the Geological Survey's Web site, Earthquakes with magnitude of about 2.0 or less are usually called microearthquakes; they are not commonly felt by people and are generally recorded only on local seismographs.
